Dear Friends,They will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth. Timothy 4:1-5
We listen to what we want to hear. We choose between MSNBC and Fox News; the editorial slant of The New York Times and that of The Wall Street Journal.
Sometimes, minds already made up are hard to live with. It seems, though, that truth is really found through the clash of ideas and open debate.  It's not set in stone.
When Paul urges listening to the truth, not just to what we want to hear, he is not talking about something set in stone. He's talking about Jesus.  And when Jesus speaks of being the truth he speaks of being, not the answer, but "the way."  The first name of the church was "The Way," and the earliest believers were known, not as "Followers of the Truth," but "Followers of the Way."
From the beginning Christianity involved a clash of ideas. The way of Jesus never prevents or dodges controversy, among or beyond his followers. On the way to truth we can hardly claim to have arrived. This means watching out or we will set ourselves in stone.  It means asserting our own position while welcoming different kinds of people and persuasions. It means listening for the God who is still speaking, often outside of our own set views. Here’s a prayer for us all, “May I listen as carefully to others as you do to me, O God, especially when I know I'm right!  Amen.”                                                                    Peace,
                        Peggy
